Rusty team riders Barron Mamiya, Hunter Johnson, and Kaito Kino competed in HSA at Sandy Beach. HSA is the qualifier for the Surfing America USA Championships. The conditions at Sandy's was 3-4 feet and victory at sea winds and chops. Barron took the win in the Boys Under 12s and Kaito won the Open Men's division and placed 4th in the Under 18s. Hunter placed 4th in the Under 14s. Great surfing Barron, Hunter, and Kaito! Check back for photos and videos from the event.

Rusty girl Mahina Maeda took 2nd place at the Rip Curl GromSearch National Championships at Ocean Beach, California. She surfed well throughout the event, but fell just shy of the title in the finals to fellow Hawaiian Tatiana Weston-Webb. Way to represent on the mainland Mahina! Aside from sightseeing what San Francisco has to offer, Mahina will now travel to Santa Cruz to compete in the Volcom event at Steamer Lane. Good Luck!

Rip Curl GromSearch National Championships - "Somewhere in San Francisco"

Rusty team rider Mahina Maeda traveled to San Francisco to represent Hawaii in the Rip Curl GromSearch National Championships held "Somewhere in San Francisco" November 3, 2011. The winners of the Boys 16/U and Girls 16/U will win a trip to Bells Beach, Australia to compete in the GromSearch International Final. Ocean Beach, California offered the GromSearch competitors cold water and small surf. Below is a few photos of Mahina's trip thus far. Go Mahina!

Rusty Girl Mahina Maeda just picked up a new board for the upcoming Winter swells. After adding her artistic touch to it, she took it out for a test ride at Rocky Lefts on Oahu's North Shore. Looks like it's working quite well for her.

On October 23, the Hawaii World Junior Surf Team held training and selection for the girls at Rice Bowls. Mahina was in attendance as well as fellow hopefuls Mainei and Maluhia Kinimaka, Dax McGill, Tatiana Weston-Webb, and Bailey Nagy.

Kaito Kino at HI World Junior Team Training Oct 16-17

Rusty Hawaii team rider Kaito Kino trained with the Hawaii World Junior Team hopefuls this past weekend at Ehukai Beach on Oahu's North Shore. They surfed Pupukea, Gas Chambers, and OTW. They learned stretching, exercises, and ran mock heats with each other under the judging of HWJT coaches Rainos Hayes, Jason Shibata, and Kahea Hart. Here's a few photos from his practice sessions. Hawaii World Team Training Oct 15

The Hawaii World Junior Surf Team held training today at Ehukai Beach Park on Oahu's North Shore. This is the 2012 junior team's first practice and team selection/finalization. Rusty team riders Mahina Maeda and Kaito Kino attended the training session amongst Hawaii's top rated junior surfers. Training will resume bright and early tomorrow morning at Ehukai. NSSA Event #6 Sunset Beach, Oahu Oct 8-9

NSSA Hawaii conference held Event #6 at Sunset Beach on Oahu's North Shore. Sunset Point was the spot with consistent 4-6 foot surf rolling through all the way into Vals Reef. There were a couple West Bowl peaks sneaking up on the surfers throughout the event as well. The Rusty team had another succesful event, with all of the team making at least one final and earning valuable points towards NSSA Nationals qualification in 2012. Mahina Maeda made all 4 Finals, taking a 2nd in Explorer Girls, 3rd in Explorer Womens, 2nd in Open Girls, and 3rd in Open Womens. Kaito Kino won Explorer Juniors and took 3rd in Explorer Mens. Barron Mamiya won Open Boys and took 2nd in Open Juniors. Hunter Johnson placed 6th in Explorer Boys. Great job Rusty Hawaii team! Next event is NSSA Event #7 at Banyans, Big Island, Hawaii in late November. Stay tuned for updates!

Kaito Kino Showing the Judges a Little Bit of Progression
The Hawaii leg of the Rip Curl Gromsearch presented by H2O Overdrive went off at Kewalo Basin on Oahu's South Shore. The 16-and-under contestants showcased their surfing prowess in a building south swell at one of towns most popular waves. Rusty Hawaii team riders Kaito Kino and Mahina Maeda surfed well throughout the event mixing powerful and progressive surfing, but fell short in the final, both finishing runner-up in their respective divisions. Their 2nd place finishes in the Hawaii qualifier earned them a spot in the Rip Curl Gromsearch National Finals in San Fracisco, CA in conjunction with the ASP Rip Curl Search CT Event November 1-12, 2011.

The Rusty surf team traveled to Lahaina Harbor, Maui to compete in Event #5 of the NSSA Hawaii Conference. Maui's South Shore offered small but contestable surf in the 1.5-3 foot range for the competitors. The rampy rights and long lefts at the harbor made for an exciting display of surfing from Hawaii's young rising talent pool of surfers. The Rusty team mixed progressive surfing with good contest strategy at the NSSA event. Rusty team rider Kaito Kino (@kaitokino123) backed up his 3 wins (Open Mens, Explorer Mens, Explorer Juniors) at NSSA Event #1 at Kewalos with 2 Wins in the Open and Explorer Mens Finals and a 2nd in the Explorer Juniors Final. Mahina Selected For 2011 Hawaii World Junior Team

Congratulations to Rusty Hawaii Girl Mahina Maeda for being selected to the 2011 Verizon Wireless Hawaii World Junior Surf Team. Mahina will join Hawaii's best young surfers and represent Hawaii to compete in the 2011 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships May 21-29 in Punta Hermosa, Peru. Congrats Mahina!

2011 NSSA Hawaii Regional Championships Mar 17-19

The 2011 NSSA HRC was held on March 17-19 at Kewalo Basin on Oahu's South Shore. The surfers were treated to playful surf and strong offshore conditions at "The Point." Rustys Mahina Maeda, Barron Mamiya, and Kaito Kino lit up the scoreboard, posting consistently high scores and advancing to the finals in their respective divisions. Mahina made finals in 3 divisions, placing 2nd in Explorer Girls, 6th in Explorer Women, and 6th in Open Girls. Mahina also took the Open Womens Conference Title for the 2010-11 Season. Kaito placed 3rd in the pretigious Open Mens Final and took 4th in Explorer Juniors. Barron took 2nd in Open Mini Groms and 2nd in Open Boys. Congrats to the Rusty Hawaii team; Mahina, Kaito, Barron, and Hunter Johnson for qualifying to the 2011 NSSA National Championships presented by Nike 6.0, June 26-July 3 at Huntington Beach, CA. Way to represent guys! Look forward to see big things from these 4 this summer on the Golden Coast.

HSA Kewalos May 2 : Mahina Wins!

HSA held their final event of the 2009-10 season at Kewalo Basin. The conditions were contestable in the 1 to 2 foot range with side offshore winds blowing. Mahina took the win in the Girls 17 and Under Division over finalists Bailey Nagy, Dax Mcgill, and Jenna Forti. Great job Mahina!

The 2010 North Shore Soap Factory Pipeline Womens Pro event went off on the final day of the 2-week waiting period. The waves were marginal at best, 1-3 feet with sideoffshore winds blowing and challenging conditions. The girls made the best of what was offered and strung together solid wave scores. 12-Year old Rusty Girl Mahina Maeda fell victim to the morning conditions and was eliminated with a 3rd Place finish in Round 1 of competition. Rusty Surfboards team rider Anastasia Ashley of California won the event this year. Congrats Anastasia!

Rusty Girl Mahina Maeda is entered in the 2010 North Shore Soap Factory Pipeline Womens Pro event. The contest has a 2-week waiting period where contest directors can elect to run the event on the 2 best days at Pipeline and Backdoor. Mahina and her friends Dax McGill and Tatiana Weston-Webb were out getting their feet wet in the Pipe Lineup as soon as the 2:30PM school bell rang. All three girls are entered in the event, with Mahina being the youngest competitor this year. The event looks good to run this weekend with a new NorthWest Swell heading our way. AccessSurf Hawaii put on an event at White Plains Beach at Barbers Point on Oahus West shore. AccessSurf provides people with disabilities the opportunity to experience the sport of surfing in a safe learning environment and enjoy a day at the beach with family and friends. Kaz Sano of NovusSwell.com got the youth of Hawaii together to volunteer their efforts for a great cause. Rusty groms Mahina Maeda and Hunter Johnson showed up to support AccessSurf. There was a great turnout of volunteers and participants. I felt great knowing that I was volunteering my time to help others who are less fortunate than myself enjoy something that we share a common interest in...SURFING! I was impressed with all of the kids that showed up to help AccessSurf. They gave up their saturday to do volunteer work and you could tell by the look on their faces that they actually enjoyed what they were doing. They should feel good about themselves for helping out and sharing the stoke of surfing and i'm proud of all of them. Great job guys! Check out Kaz's NovusSwell Webisode covering the event above! HSA was held at Sandy Beach Full Point. Surf was a messy 2-3 feet with the south and east swells crossing and the side shore winds gusting. Conditions were contestable nonetheless and the groms made the best of the conditions. Rusty riders Mahina Maeda and Hunter Johnson were in attendance for this event. Mahina placed 4th in the Girls Division Final. Hunter placed 5th in the Boys 12-14 Division Final. Next HSA event is Kakaako Flies on April 10th. HSA States is right around the corner too(May 7,8,9th)!

HSA ran at Kakaako Beach Park today at a spot called Flies. The south swell kicked in and provided competitors with well overhead surf and offshore winds. Mahina and Austin entered the event and took 3rd in their respective divisions in the Finals. The big surf from the rising South swell made wave selection the magic key to winning heats. Good job Guys! Next event is HSA at Sandy Beach next weekend.

Barron Mamiya and Mahina Maeda made their presence known at this years 2010 NSSA HRC at Kewalo Basin. Barron placed 3rd in the Open MiniGroms Final, 1st in the Open MiniGroms Ratings, and was awarded Freddy P.'s Golden Ticket to NSSA Nationals. Mahina made Finals in all 3 of her divisions, placing 2nd in Open Womens, 3rd in Explorer Girls, and 5th in Explorer Womens. Austin Vicente and Hunter Johnson made it to the Semis in their respective divisions. Austin was awarded the Rory Parker Award and will have 4 Events/2 Divisions comped next season. Hunter received a similar award and will also have 4 Events/2 Divisions comped next season. Congrats to Barron, Mahina, Austin, and Hunter for qualifying for NSSA Nationals! Rusty Riders Mahina, Barron, Hunter, and Austin are competing in the NSSA Hawaii Regional Championships this weekend. The event has had contestable surf in the solid 1-2 foot Hawaiin Style Scale range at "the Point" at Kewalos Basin. Saturday and Sunday saw the completion of the Open Divisions and the preliminary rounds of the Explorer Divisions. Monday will see the finals of the Explorer Divisions and Air Show and Awards Banquet at the beach. Austin and Hunter surfed solid in their heats in the Explorer Juniors and Explorer Menehune Divisions respectively, but couldn't find a 2nd scoring wave in their heats to advance. Barron made the Open Mini-Groms Final. He surfed his Final this morning and made the most of the inside left reforms, scoring a reeling left hander in the dying minutes of the heat and hacking away. Mahina made the Finals for all 3 of her Divisions (Open Womens, Explorer Womens, Explorer Girls) this weekend! Can't wait to see Finals Heats surfing and hear Results tomorrow. Keep you posted. This Saturday Rusty Girl Mahina Maeda celebrated her 12th Bday along with her sister Kaena's 14th Bday on the West Side of Oahu aboard the Island Princess Dolphin Tours Catamaran. She and her friends enjoyed a day of fun in the sun swimming with dolphins and jellyfish, SUPing, Kayaking, Blasting Justin Beiber and LMFAO, and Birthday Cake Wars.

Kylen Yamakawa kept on bugging me to go surf early this morning for about three consecutive hours, so I made a few phone calls when I finally woke up and Rusty Team Rider Hunter Johnson told us the waves in his backyard were looking good. So I loaded the car, picked up Kylen and Cole Yamakawa, and we drove over and surfed at Kaneohe Bay with Hunter. The waves were a fun 2-3 feet with sandbars everywhere. The waves weren't exactly perfect, but they were definitely fun. Kylen was sticking backside air reverses on the rights while Cole was blowing tail on his frontside. Hunter was ripping his homebreak and showed us how to surf the playful sandbar rights and lefts. Thanks Hunter!

VQS Division Winners Kai Matsumoto (Groms), Mahina Maeda (Girls), Kylen Yamakawa (Juniors)
Volcom Stone held its Pufferfish Surf Series event at Maile Point on Oahu's Westside. The surf was going off with solid 4-6 foot hundred yard long lefts coming off the point all day long. Rusty groms Eala Stewart, Barron Mamiya, Hunter Johnson, Luke Shepardson, Austin Vicente, and Mahina Maeda were in attendance for this event in hopes to qualify for the Crusty Champs at Newport Beach, California in May. They went off in the long Maile lefts, linking together radical turns and barrels to get the scores needed to advance. Luke, Barron, and Hunter surfed well in their opening round heats, but narrowly missed out on the Finals in their divisions. Eala and Austin surfed solid all day and placed 3rd and 4th respectively in the Groms Division Final. Mahina won the Girls Division Final over a stacked field, throwing down huge scores throughout the day and looking real comfortable in the well-overhead surf.

NSSA Pinetrees, Kauai Jan 9-10 : Barron Wins!

NSSA held event #8 at Pinetrees, Kauai.

The contest was held in loom of a giant Eddie Aikau status swell on the way come Sunday evening. The waves on offer at Pinetrees during the weekend was 4-5 feet with highly contestable conditions.

Rusty groms Barron Mamiya, Hunter Johnson, Austin Vicente, and Mahina Maeda were on hand for the event in hopes of improving their rankings going into Regionals in late March.

The kids surfed great and made a bunch of finals in their respective divisions. Barron came away with the win in the Open Mini Groms Final. Hunter placed 5th in the Open Boys Final. Mahina was a 3 Division Finalist, placing 5th in Open Womens, 4th in Explorer Womens, and 5th in Explorer Girls Finals.

After the event, Hunter and his Dad Ron took us to surf a secret spot on the Westside of Kauai. The drive from our hotel to the break was about an hour long. The conditions along the coast looked marginal at best with onshore winds and shoulder high surf, but we still had hope that the point we were heading to would be firing.

We arrived at the beach and were stoked to find offshore winds, great surf, and no crowds! We scored some great double overhead pointbreak surf with only a few guys out! So Stoked! Can't wait til our next trip over there. Thanks again Ron and Hunter! Good call and epic waves!

Mahina has been surfing a lot as of late. Shes a member of the Verizon Hawaii World Junior Surf Team and has been training with them on Oahu's North Shore. 2010 will be an exciting year for Mahina and we'll see where her surfing takes her.

40th Annual Haleiwa International Open Dec 21-24

The 40th Annual Haleiwa International Open was blessed with good surf and great conditions. These factors along with the prestige that this event holds brought about a stacked field of competitors eager to take the win in their respective divisions. The HIO was held in everything from playful 3-5 foot surf in the opening rounds, to macking 8-10 foot surf on day 3 of competition. Rusty riders Austin, Mahina, Luke Shepardson, and Dana Tortuga were entered and surfed well throughout the event. Haleiwa regular and stand-out Austin took the win in the Boys Division. He's not afraid to charge big waves and it showed in his heats as he negotiated critical turns on the biggest waves that came through. He also surfed up in age divisions, missing making the Finals of the Juniors in the Semis and Mens in the Quarters. Luke Shepardson also made the Finals in the Boys Division, placing 4th. Mahina entered the Open Womens Longboard and Shortboard Divisions. She surfed well in her heats, but just missed the Finals in both divisions, being edged out in the Semis. Longboarder Dana Tortuga combined stylish noserides with graceful top turns, leading her through the opening rounds to a 4th Place Finals appearance. Below is a few photos from the event. HSA Makaha : Mahina Wins!

HSA held event #6 of their surf series at Makaha. The waves were similar to the surf at the Rell Sunn Championships a couple of weeks prior. Peeling rights, 2-3 feet with offshore winds. Austin placed 5th in the Boys 12-14 Shortboard Division. With the Finals appearance, Austin moved up to 1st in the HSA Boys 12-14 Shortboard Ratings. Mahina won the Girls Shortboard Division. Both Austin and Mahina surfed excellent throughout the event.

Rell Sunn Menehune Championships

The Rell Sunn Menehune Championships was held at Makaha Beach during Thanksgiving weekend and brought families and groms together to enjoy a weekend of sun and surf. The waves were a playful 2 to 3 feet all weekend long and was a treat for the pint-sized surfers. Rusty team Mahina placed 4th in Girls Shortboard and 4th in Girls Longboard.

Rusty Hawaii BBQ at Mahina's house. It's the Triple Crown surf season on the North Shore of Oahu. That means that everyone in the surf industry and their team riders are in the Islands at some point this Winter in hopes of experiencing the North Shore's famous surf and coastline. We decided it was the perfect time to put together a casual, local-style BBQ to bring everyone together and have everyone meet everyone in the Rusty Family. Good food and great company. HSA Maile Point Nov 22 : Austin Wins!

HSA was finally able to hold event #5 of their surf series after being skunked with no surf last weekend. The lefts were firing today, reaching 3-5 feet Hawaiian scale on the sets. The Rusty groms put on a show, selecting good waves and surfing well throughout the event. Austin, Hunter, and Mahina all made the Finals in their respective divisions. Austin Vicente took the Win in the Boys 12-14 Division. He picked off the set waves and his surfing delivered, topping a stacked Boys Final edging out Kaoli Kahakuloa for the win. Hunter Johnson finished not too far behind, placing 4th Place in the Final with Austin and Kaoli. Rusty girl Mahina Maeda placed 3rd in the Girls Shortboard Division. She surfed awesome in her heats, but could not find the crucial second scoring wave needed in the Final. Great Job Today Hunter, Austin, and Mahina!

Kewalos Session Nov 16

Mahina came into Town to surf today after school. The waves at Kewalos were 2-3 feet and really rippable. For Town in Mid-November, the waves are epic. Kaz was shooting today and got some shots of Mahina.

This evening, Jason Shibata(Ronin eyewear), Kaz Sano(Novus Swell), and I(Rusty) organized a dinner for Mahina at the House of Dragon chinese restaurant in Pearl City. The purpose of the dinner was to get Mahina and her family and friends together to celebrate her recent sponsorships with Rusty clothing and Ronin eyewear and her competitive successes as of late. Did I mention that Mahina is a member of the Hawaii World Junior Surf Team Development Program! So congratulations Mahina! We look forward to seeing big things from you!

World Team Training Nov 9

The Hawaii World Junior Surf Team trains at Ehukai beach park. Their training program consists of stretching, exercising, and surfing development among other things. Rainos Hayes of Billabong and Kahea Hart of Arnette are coaching the team.

2010 Hawaii World Team member and Rusty team rider Mahina Maeda and Tatiana Weston-Webb pick up rubbish at Turtle bay during the NSSA event. The Hawaii World Team participates in community service activities in the Islands to promote the Aloha Spirit and will carry it with them when they travel to New Zealand for Worlds in 2010.

NSSA Turtle Bay Nov 7-8 : Barron Wins!

This past weekend, NSSA Hawaii held an event at Turtle Bay Poolside. The waves were about 3-6 feet and offered contestable conditions for the surfers. Turnout was good and NSSA produced yet another "full" event.

Barron Mamiya claimed yet another event win, taking the Open MiniGroms Win over a stacked field of groms. I told you guys he rips! Mahina made it to the Repo of Explorer Womens before getting knocked out of advancing position in a closely contested heat. Hunter got 4th in the Explorer Menehune Finals. Eala and Austin fell victim to the conditions and could not find the waves offering scoring potential needed to advance. All in all, it was a good weekend and the kids will look forward to bettering their results at the next NSSA at Pinetrees, Kauai in January 2010.

Hunter Johnson!

Hunter relocated from California to the East side of Oahu this summer. He's a really mellow kid on land, but definitely knows how to put his gameface on in heats. Hunter's been doing good in the Hawaii NSSA regional events and is determined to qualify for NSSA Nationals in 2010. Watch for this kid!
